Topic: Neighbour with alzheimers screams and swears all night

My neighbour, who I have been told suffers from alzheimers, screams and swears every night at approx 10 minute intervals from around 8pm right through to 4-5am.
Initially thinking that he was being abused I phoned the council but they tell me that I should be understanding and that there is nothing they can do.

Well I'm sorry but my understanding has just run out now that I'm in danger of losing my job after days of little or no sleep - what can I do?

This is a really difficult situation. You have to tread carefully because they may call you out for discrimination, regardless of the noise. I'm not really sure what you can do. Perhaps contact a legal helpline? My only advice is to tread carefully, always.

my son has tourettes and my neighbours complained in the summer when my windows were open- so i do find it hard not to sway on the disability side- that saidi did have sympathy for my neighbours- got some fans in and kept my windows shut- i couldnt take the tourettes away but i could try my best to limit what my neihgbours went through. i wonder if there is anhyway you can arrange a meeting with the carer- havea g ood chat about it- sit down over a drink of coffee and explain situation- say you arent complaining as alzeimers is debilitating and you lend your support- if you can help in anyway- but the thing is the noise is disturbing you- short of moving house- your only option is to communicate and see if there is anyway you and your neighbour can use different rooms at different times of the day. you could say its unfair to change your huse around but if you dont move it might be the only way- you want to be where you neighbur isnt in the day and vica versa. perhaps they can do things too- but they cant help if you dont discuss it with them- tread carefully though wont you- they cant help it can they,

Re: Neighbour with alzheimers screams and swears all night

Just thought I'd add my thoughts in case this was still a problem.

From what I've been told, a common problem people suffering from Alzheimer's (or other forms of dementia) have is an increased level of confusion at the end of the day due to lower levels of light, which can turn the world into a daunting place for someone with an advanced form of their condition. Therefore, it may be worth suggesting they keep a light on at night or use a nightlight, as this can ease their anxiety and hopefully solve your problem at the same time.

Hope this helps
