Topic: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Hi,  IS THERE A NOISE EXPERT LOOKING IN ON THE WEBSITE?????.... I have a problem with these noises..... humming.....the sound of machinery working.....  rumbling...... thundering...... all at a very low frequency...... micro vibration which just seems to hang in the air.  I have in mind possible sources, my nearest machinery big enough to make such a sound is nearly a mile away!!!! Although the humming may be closer i.e. electricity.

It is louder in the house than outside.....Not everybody can hear it...... I have had a weighted noise meter in the house on several occassions and, even though the noise is very loud to me, nothing is recorded on it.......I have  a meter here at the moment and I am wondering how I can see if anything is being picked up on it.  The machine I have is BRUEL AND KJAER 2250 I think it must be set so that nothing shows on the display.

I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL FOR ANY INPUT

Mac99,  Thankyou for your input........very much appreciated smile I will follow up your suggestions.

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Are you anywhere near to  flight path?

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

I have experienced  something quite  similar in the past and it was water related. I was lucky that the water company accidently came across the problem. It's difficult and frustrating when others care unable  to hear something  but i too often hear these sounds that to some are just not there. I think once we become aware of a nosie nothing can kill that noise until the problems is sorted out.

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Hi jaytee,

Thank you for your interest....Do you think the experience you mentioned could have relevance to what what is happening with me?  I should be grateful if you could tell me story, if you are happy to do so that is...

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Hi,

Mine wasnt quite  likes yours but it was water related. Mostly the nosies coming into he house  were much louder then what you have described. When the toilet was fllushed  or a tap raun i got noises akin to a terrible rattle always coming from below the floor. Then  the bathroom would almost shake. This would stop after  about 15 minutes. I sought advice from various plumbers but all to no avail. I also had other related nosies. I often heard lieke   a humming which seemed to come from the floors even downstairs. I had exhausted all avenues in my efforts  to find the source when one day a man from the water service was out checking things in the ground and he knocked on my door and asked me  if i had any rattles or strange sounds. Well, at that stage I could have written a book on my sound experiences. I am not sure what action he took but after that day all noises went away. I think some other peopl e had been experiencing similar problems but were dotted all over the place  and that it was a problem about a mile away under the ground relating to water.

It would appear  there is  a whole world under there that can cause such noises in our homes making us feel like we are going in sane because the source cannot be found.

I know water pressure problems can cause   strange sounds often subtle but very annoying. Have had an encounter with those as well.

Hope you have some success in your continued efforts to unearth the problem.  Don't give up.

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Oh I have water issues too! haha, sounds a bit wrong! I can hear every time my neighbours turn their taps off cos they bang. It bangs when they use the washing machine, it bangs when they have a shower / bath. Lost count number of times I have asked them to get it fixed!

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Jo,

In my experiences and there have ben many of them  water related the banging  you describe can be to do with water  pressure being too high. The wrong valve in a toilet for the watter  pressure can cause an awful loud banging sound after the toilet is flushed. My neighbours toilet used to  constantly wake me at night until i told themabout the valve. I too used to have the problem.

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

I have asked them a number of times to let the engineer in. they are council tenants so dont pay for it but they refuse to let them in. must be hiding something!!!! the noise only started a few months ago so suspect somethihg was changed in their flat

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

I agree. Sounds a bit suspicious.

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

well I dont get why they wouldnt let the engineers in when the neighbours arent paying for it!!! all they have to do is let them do their work. end of. the fact they ignore the knocking on the door and pretend they arent in just seems odd to me

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Not at all.... wink

We have to hope the sound equipment does its job.....and for steps to be taken to abate the nusiences....without fear nor favour....which is within the E P Act 1990....as for the costs...its down to the owner of the source of the nusience(s). There's nothing in E P Act about permission to not act due to the costs incurred.  hmm

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Torment,

just across from where i live is  a terrible low frequency sound of humming and buzzing. I can't hear  it in the house but I can if outside at night when  its quiet. It's electricity related. I wish we could just shut the world up.

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Street lighting.....

someone's outside lighting....

emergency lighting....

lights coming on when daylight falls....which go off in daylight....

all these things have "components", subject to aging and wearing....(usually) easy to fix once the source is known...its finding the source thats the problem....once its off and running the vibrations sing, hum, and throb along walls...and its a matter of turn off and see the difference....sometimes the people who appoint positioning do not have a clue the utter and absolute misery which is caused.

and sometimes....so called self appointed experts get it wrong.... neutral and sometimes your lucky to get a "sorry" (after 16 months and 16 days) lol  mad

Re: Low frequency or Cannot find the source of it noise...........

Thank you, allytech and Pandora,

Yes, I hope the equipment has picked up something.......  I asked about the weighting and EH assure me the weighting is correct... 'C ' I think ,and that if any noise is present it will pick it up....... mind you they have said that in the past....... when other people have witnessed the noise.....then said there's nothing there.

If I get no joy I will have to go back to others who can hear it and try and persuade them to add their voice to mine.  And hope leafleting the affected area brings forth more people.

Pandora, what you say about the law has lifted my spirits, I need to read it up, are you able tell me exactly what I should be looking at? smile
