I had noise equipment machine installed a few weeks ago, like the size of a briefcase, with a microphone sitting on top, then long wire with the button on the end when you press when you hear noise.
Mine went to the side of the sofa, I was a little worried it wouldnt pick up the noise in the bedroom/hallway but the council said they are very sensitive so should pick it up.
They made us do a couple of recordings so she can tell the difference between our background noise and noisy neighbours. We filled in the sheet when they started being noisy, press the record button and it records for 3 mins. if you dont pick it up in time, dont worry the unit records all the time on a graph like sheet, so as long as the time matches what you recorded down on the sheet, they can match the spike on the graph to the noise you heard.
Our problems are banging and running around from above, so I kept finding it hard to records bangs, by the time I got to the machine it had stopped!
I would advise when you are recording to turn all noise off/ tv down so they can pick it up clearly.
We are still waiting on our results, fingers crossed!!
