Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

I agree with Mac on this one. There's no reason why legal precedents can't be discussed here - as long as they aren't presented as being legal advice (which to my mind they haven't been). It's just a case of making people aware of what has happened previously in the courts so that they can better understand their rights under the existing law.

Laurence,

I'd like to suggest a section for dealing with "noisy neighbours" this could include links to support sites, peoples suggestions eg relaxation techniques etc how we has individuals cope

Thanks

Jon

Perhaps this would be better accomplished on the main site, rather than the forum? I could create a new page with this kind of material. Would anyone with experience be willing to submit any text for inclusion in such a page?

Hi Laurence, I do not think a general 'chat' forum on this site is adviseable as it could encourage prejudice from non noisy neighbor sufferers and discourage people from posting their stories here. the facts posted about the law and maybe some figures(noise levels etc) & phone no.s in an easy to find place would be helpful. the ability to reply to individual posts with the facility to inform the 'postee' that they have a reply would be great as replies posted usually get lost behind a torrent of other posts and 'postee's' do not always trawl the site for replies or aware of the RSS feed facility.  Once developed the site needs a using guide possibly?
Thanks for all the great support and posts
Happy hearing!!!

p.s. I think I just created a new word (postee)!!!

People can subscribe to an individual topic by clicking the link on the top-right. This is probably simpler for a lot of people who might not understand/use RSS feeds. That function sends an email when a new post is added to the topic which is subscribed to. I don't think I can do any more than that - it's standard fare for forum software.

There's also the twitter feed http://twitter.com/noisyneighbours which automatically tweets all posts from the forum... that might be worth people following if they're interested in keeping abreast of what people are saying here.

I'd like to think the site is simple enough not to need a user's guide - after all, it's a place with simple advice combined with a forum for informal discussion - I don't think that's overly complex for most users.

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

Hi,

Has anyone ever done a survey of how many of these noisy neighbours have laminate flooring which is either not properly insulated or is actually keyed into the wall.  This flooring makes any room seem like a cathedral, amplifies the sound and, if it is keyed into the wall by, say, a nail, will transfer noise through a party wall.  Some people who would like to be good neighbours do not realise what a problem this flooring can cause if not correctly fitted.  What about a public information campaign?

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

add to Ally's point above....every E H department has access to data concerning every complaint/court ruling nationwide....there sitting on a timebomb of people's misery....

its rather like the Poor Law Act 1834.....basically the administration and interpretation was literally down to the master and his wife of each workhouse....this is my opinion.

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

I'm not sure if this had been said, but as I've found out noisy neighbours can also be nuisance neighbours aswell . And with me going slightly off-topic in one of the recent threads allytech gave me some great advice and gave me a link to useful information.

I know theres lots of other forums out there that deal with nuisance neighbours, landlords, tenants etc but it would be nice to have all eggs in one basket. Everyone I've had dealings with and the other posts i've read on this site everyone is really helpful and most important grownup smile

So maybe the site could have a general chat section for other problems with neighbours/councils etc?

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

David, use an electricity blocker on their meter or where the electricity enters their space.  This can
slow down the energy to the source of the noise or sound or cut it out totally.  Needless to say
that this needs to be done surreptitiously or from a distance so nobody knows why the electricity
has stopped working.  At least you will get a good nights sleep before they can get it repaired.
Eventually, they will get the message, or not!

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

I want to see penalties imposed on associations who try to wish wash complaints by tenants who make complaints of Anti Social behaviour.  I know to well that complaints should be looked at by case by case basis, but if a neighbour has had a history where they have been victim of Anti Social behaviour and subsequent due to bad luck , has encountered another nuisance neighbour that should NOT be used as an escape goat for Councils/Associations. I feel that feedbacks/calls should be made to victims of Anti Social behaviour and all complaints taken very seriously. Associations/Councils are so quick to take peoples hard earned money and employ less than capable staff who have just left school with a few GCSE's and  in most cases lives with their mothers . They have no idea on the effects that NN can cause. My association is certainly run by imcompetent teenagers and quick to label/stereotype and their role is simply to ingore complaints and claim they are an outstanding HO within the association and we all know the way they achieved that is neglecting their pigging duties  mad

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

we have been plagued by the combination of laminate flooring in the flat above us and neighbours who insist on using a baby walker for their 10 month old son. Despite repeated approaches to the tenants - polite requests, not so polite requests, ignoring, responding, they would not stop using it at least twice a day for up to 30 minutes at a time, 7 days a week and usually more at the weekend. The landlord decided that he would put down a rug and adopted the attitude of "There is nothing else I can do." Short of taking some legal advice and action,  we felt stuck in this daily assault. However, we sent the tenants the sample letter from this site (see approaching your neighbours) and translated it for them so there could be no misunderstanding. It didn't make any difference! But after sending it to the landlord he has now said he will get carpet fitted! I won't believe it till I see it, but it seems to have worked. Thanks for the advice smile

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

Hello all,
I'm living in a crap conversion below an energetic toddler whose endless running and jumping is seriously affecting my sanity... I've posted about the situation separately and I'm really keen to get any feedback from people who've had a false ceiling put in, in a similar situation. It (soundproofing against impact noise)sounds very hit and miss and could be a very expensive mistake, but moving (selling up) is going to cost a whole lot more.
My short term sanity saver is this: wax ear plugs and Ear defenders (Standard, £8, B and Q) , and then put some kind of background noise on (I've got the radio on low) just to distract a bit from the thundering footsteps you wouldn't think possible from a 16 month old toddler. Obviously it's far from ideal- I can't hear the phone/door etc, but this evening I have at least been able to do some work at home instead of just walking out the door to escape.
Any soundproofing feedback very gratefully received! Thanks

We have pointed out that the noise we suffer is made worse by the fact that our neighbour has laminate (it is against the tenancy agreements but she was give permission!!!!) housing managment accept this is part of the problem and have offered to replace it with carpet for her but she refused, now they have given up trying to get it removed and are allowing her to keep it.  I feel a public information campaign would not help, people who want laminate will just take no notice, what is needed are tenancy terms that are enforced and those of us in rented property and tough laws on noise disturbance for everyone

Re: Give us your suggestions to improve Noisy Neighbours

There is a petition thread...change our lives for the better, sign our petitions.......post 1 on page 1........and you have to remember to click on the link you will receive to confirm.....there is one about laminate flooring.

Anywhere in England, it's against the law to cause a disturbance between the hours of 11pm and 7 am.

You could have fooled me, I live in London and my awful upstairs neighbours often play loud music after 11pm and have noisy plumbing that bangs until all hours of the night and veery little has been done to stop them after we've told the council about them, as for the police they'll never take this kind of issue seriously.

Really??!!  Do you live in a generally noisy or rough area?  If so, I could understand why the police wouldn't see it as being a big problem, if the environment is noisy anyway.  Otherwise, I don't see how they can't take it seriously!

No offence but if you think any police force will take noise seriously you dont live in the real world...police didnt come out for nearly a week after i`d suffered a burglary stating they were "overstretched" so do you think they would attemd for somebody slamming pots/pans and doors?
