I imagine that Melbum has sorted the situation, or given up, as she/he hasn't been back. The original post was a long time ago! As it is, the measures to take are exactly the same as any other noise nuisance - ask nicely, write a polite note, start taking notes of dates and times, then decide whether to make a formal complaint. Thereafter things get more complicated!

From personal experience, retaliation is NOT recommended!
My neighbours used to play very loud music at all hours, so one night I decided to do the same as soon as theirs stopped. The result? They banged on the wall, and played even louder music for longer in to the wee small hours every night thereafter!
Then, when ever I made any kind of noise, even such as dropping something by accident, they'd bang on the wall and complain as if it was one big joke to them. I then was afraid to move in my own home!
I can't describe how that feels, so please please please please think before you act. These people are usually not level headed and very unreasonable!
How about, as soon as he stops playing, put on some piano music, as loud as he was playing?
I live next door to a very inconsiderate piano teacher. He only teaches in the evenings and weekends, but insists on playing constantly. I have lived next to him for 3 years, and despite mentioning that this is annoying, he has done nothing to change his ways. I have even offered to build him sound proofing, but this was just laughed at. Short of sticking his head throw the damn thing, I can't do anything. Any thoughts?
